Griffin watched the first rays of sunshine pierce through the edge of the blinds. Heâd thought for hours about his fight with Grace last night. She was right. He needed to talk to Norie and make sure she wasnât under the same delusion as his mother. With a satisfied Grace in his arms, he replayed everything that had happened at his parentsâ house the day before. Norie seemed to be on board with all the craziness his mother had spouted and that worried him. He didnât want to hurt his old friendâs feelings, but she needed to understand that Grace was in his life, permanently he hoped, and he had no intention of ever moving back to Augusta.
He considered packing up and just leaving. Grace had met Grams and Gramps, and they seemed to love her as much as he did. Heâd like his father to meet her, though. And he still had to talk to both of them, together. He felt he owed them that much. Running away from a situation was not the way he handled things.
Grace stirred in his arms then propped her chin on his chest and looked up at him. âItâs going to be all right, you know. Everything will work out.â
âAre you reassuring me or yourself?â He pulled her up so they were both sitting with their backs against the huge headboard.
âIâm a big girl. Weâll make it through your motherâs dinner party tonight. And while you escort Norie to that formal function,â she gave him an evil grin, âIâm going to sit in this bed and eat crackers and ice cream while watching chick flicks. Iâm going to be perfectly fine with the situation, because I know that after you say good night to Norie, youâre going to come back here, crawl naked into this bed, and put a smile on my face. Twice.â
âJust twice?â He slid her glance. âI believe I put that sexually satiated look on your face four times last night. I would suggest going for a fifth right now, but we should be on time for breakfast this morning.â
âLetâs go.â Grace threw the covers off the bed. âIâm starving. Although the leftover cobbler at midnight was really good, hate to break this to you, but it didnât replace supper.â
Griffin agreed. âGo jump in the shower.â He scratched his beard. âI need to shave.â
In record time, they walked hand-in-hand into the formal dining room. âMorning Gramps, Grams.â Griffin went straight to the coffee service and poured two cups.
âGood morning, Grams and Gramps. Did you enjoy your day at the club yesterday?â Grace took the same seat sheâd had the morning before.
âYes, my dear, we did have a good time.â Gramps put his hand over top Grams and gave it a little squeeze.
She rolled her hand over and held his for a moment, just looking at him, smiling. âThe shrimp and grits were exceptionally good last night.â
Griffin handed a cup and saucer to Grace then set down his own. Before his butt had reached the seat, the corners of his grandmotherâs mouth kicked up.
